Umbra Sumus (We Are But Shadows) is a series of paintings and drawings made for a collaborative installation with Bethe Bronson and Laura Marker in Walcot Chape. Once a mortuary set on the edge of the city of Bath, on a hilside surrounded by a graveyard full of flowers and trees. A place of 'memento mori'. From my paintings of stale flower arrangements, dead and dried narcissi and their reflections in glass I made drawings in pencil and ink exploring the visual illusions and tricks of the brain that can present ghosts and spectres of the imagination, suggested by the human desire to believe in existence beyond life.
